In the rolling hills of Galicia, Spain, a centuries-old tradition unfolds: herds of wild horses roam freely, their presence woven into the fabric of the landscape. Beyond their cultural significance, these majestic creatures play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the region's ecosystems. By grazing on underbrush and other vegetation, they naturally clear the forest floor, reducing the amount of combustible material that can fuel wildfires. This grazing activity not only mitigates the risk of devastating fires but also promotes plant biodiversity, allowing various species to thrive. In recent years, areas with active horse populations have witnessed a noticeable decline in wildfire incidents, underscoring the animals' importance in ecological balance.

However, the future of these wild horses hangs in the balance. Once numbering around 22,000 in the 1970s, their population has dwindled to less than half that figure. Several factors contribute to this decline. The costs associated with their upkeep, including veterinary care and fencing, have risen substantially. Moreover, current legislation classifies these horses as livestock, imposing financial and bureaucratic burdens on their caretakers. Despite their invaluable contribution to wildfire prevention and ecosystem health, support from regional authorities remains limited, leaving the horses' guardians struggling to sustain their herds.

The decline of Galicia's wild horses is not just a loss of cultural heritage but also a step back in effective, natural wildfire management. As climate change intensifies and the threat of wildfires grows, the role of these animals becomes even more critical. Preserving and supporting the wild horse populations in Galicia is essential, not only for the sake of tradition but also for the continued health and safety of the region's forests and communities.
